Generational Changes in Nonprofit Leadership
In the first two years of the Building Movement Project, the staff conducted a qualitative study of the differences between older and younger leaders and staff in social change organizations, which is detailed in the report, Generational Changes and Leadership: Implications for Social Change Organizations.
Following that report, Building Movement conducted listening sessions in seven cities with younger leaders to hear their reactions to the study, ask about their leadership challenges, and learn the ways they feel these challenges can be addressed. These findings are detailed in the Generational Leadership Listening Sessions Report, released in June 2004, and are included in the monograph: Up Next: Generation Change and the Leadership of Nonprofit Organizations.
We will be moving on to develop our findings into a guide for how to think and talk about the next generation of social change and movement leaders. Please let us know if you are interested in reading or contributing to this work.
