The Project

The Building Movement Project works to strengthen the role of US nonprofit organizations as sites of democratic practice and to advance ways groups can significantly contribute to building movement for progressive social change.

Specific projects include: preparing for generational changes in nonprofit and social change leadership, engaging nonprofit service organizations as sites of social change and civic engagement, and connecting grassroots groups to national policy issues. The project (www.buildingmovement.org) is housed at Dēmos in New York City.

 

The Director of Civic Engagement will be part of a small staff that works with a national team to initiate, support and carry out the Project’s work

 

Job Description

The Director of Civic Engagement will work closely with the Building Movement Project’s staff and national team to:

 

  • Support the Project’s ongoing work integrating social change values and practices into nonprofit service organizations including:
    • Work closely with and support lead national team member, Linda Campbell, on strategy and planning for the future
    • Plan, coordinate, take notes and follow-up on calls and meetings with pilot sites around the U.S. that are implementing social service and social change
    • Help write and distribute toolkit, curriculum and case studies on social service and social change
    • Serve as the staff point person in this area such as answering requests for information, planning trainings, and providing information

 

  • Develop new content area expanding our work in nonprofit service organizations and social change to include funders and national service membership organizations.
    • Develop strategy with project director
    • Plan and attend relevant meetings and conferences.
    • Assist in implementing communications strategy as it relates to civic engagement for the project and its team members.

 

  • General Civic Engagement Tasks
    • Update civic engagement materials such as a toolkit based on Building Movement trainings, case studies, brochures, and descriptions of program activities
    • Support, create, and lead trainings and presentations for both national and local audiences.
    • Write proposals and reports for raising funds, attend meetings with funders, and assist in maintaining funders’ files.
    • Participate in the financial aspects of the project including drafting budgets for funders, creating an annual budget, keeping abreast of expense reports, monitoring reports, and working with the Demos finance department.
    • Conduct research as needed.
    • Assist in supervision of administrative assistant

 

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing skills a must;
  • Ability to work in a team with a variety of people on and off site;
  • Motivated, detail-oriented and flexible;
  • Work experience with nonprofit organizations especially in the areas described above;
  • Self-starter, able to juggle multiple responsibilities, enjoy working with a wide variety of people;
  • Ability and willingness to travel;
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or relevant experience, and a minimum of five years work experience.
