Retirement USA

Last week, the Building Movement Project signed on as a supporter of Retirement USA, a national initiative that is working for a new retirement system that, along with Social Security, will provide universal, secure, and adequate income for future retirees. The initiative has developed 12 Principles for a New Retirement System which provide a framework for a future system in which employers, workers, and the government would share responsibility for the retirement security for all American workers.more

ROPE Bakers Invited to Inauguration Day

The four-man baking team of Detroit-based organization ROPE, which stands for Reaching Our Potential Everyday, has been invited to attend President-elect Barack Obama’s Inauguration Day ceremonies in Washington, D.C. on January 20, 2009. ROPE is a baking employment project of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, which has been a BMP partner for over 4 years. Social Service and Social Change: A Process Guide was developed for staff and board members of non-profit service organizations who are interested in learning how to incorporate progressive social change values and practices into their work, using step-by-step process to identify how to address systemic problems through social change work within the context of their usual services and activities, and how to decide which strategies and actions will work best for them.more

Nonprofit Service Organizations and Civic Engagement

A report on a meeting of practitioners and funders that looks at how to move civic engagement forward in nonprofit service organizations and address some of the challenges that arise. The meeting was co-sponsored by Carnegie Corporation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Alliance for Children and Families, Minnesota Council on Nonprofits, and Nonprofit Voter Engagement Project.more

This report examines some of the initial signs of change that had surfaced in the initial groups working with the Building Movement Project in Detroit several years ago. These observations provide some insight into the process, and some of the transformations and challenges that had occurred up until that point.more
